Wisdom Teeth & Epilepsy!
We’ve had another first experience without our medically complex young adult.
Wisdom teeth removal is not uncommon and generally an easy process. Unless you have Epilepsy. Every dentist we spoke with refused the work on our son. We discovered that he needed a surgical setting and would be put under genreal anesthesia. We started this process in 2022 and got nowhere with the surgical center we chose. We thought we would have the opposite experience as it is attached to the hospital where our Neurologists are located.
We waited until earlier this year and began the process again, closer to home. Our dentist recommended a different hospital and while it took a few months to get all the ducks in a row, we were finally able to execute the plan.
All in all, it took about 4.5 hours from start to finish. He did well under anesthesia and had no complications. We were extra vigilant with pain tolerance, keeping ice on his face, and making sure he stayed as hydrated as possible. He had a seizure about a week and half afger his surgery. His neurologist said that with all of the trauma his body endured, she wasn’t suprised. 3 weeks after his procedure, he was released from the oral surgery and has not had any complaints.
Advocate for your child, even if they are no longer a child. Our son is 18 and while techinically an adult and voiced his opinions on how he wanted things to proceed, getting there is where he wanted me to step on. We discussed everything until he was comfortable. Make sure you know the steps that will be taken and keep your neurology team informed.
